Celebrating Your Child’s First Year with a First Birthday Photography Session in Fareham….
Having a baby is such a special time in your life. It’s an amazing journey as your watch your baby develop and grow. And during the first year of their life they change so much. When I take lovely newborn photographs of little ones between 6-10 days after they’re born, after that time they change rapidly as they become more alert. It’s been such a difficult year for babies over the last year, mums not being able to join baby groups, and I’m sure that some mums have felt quite isolated. I love the idea of a celebration of getting through this year, and it’s just amazing to capture first birthday photographs.
There are quite a few different styles of photography for first birthday sessions. Quite a lot of photographers choose to do cake smash photo sessions, but for me, I prefer the more traditional photographs. I like to focus on the baby and their personality. The sessions are sometimes quite short, as your baby will want to crawl or walk off and might become frustrated with being placed back on the background. I’ve found recently it has been a bit strange for babies. In a number of cases, they’ve just been surrounded by mum and dad and when they come to my studio, they meet a stranger with a mask and camera and they’re expected to smile. We get there eventually!
I have some wooden bricks in the studio that I bring out which helps distract the babies from moving. Mums and dads do their most to bring a smile out of their little one. I often wonder what faces they pull behind my back to encourage their child to smile.
When we were coming out of lockdown in June 2020, when we could meet one other person outdoors, I was taking newborn photographs outside and getting the parents to pose the babies. We were so lucky that the weather was good and the alcoves in the building at the beautiful Cams Hall made the perfect setting. The first newborn photographs that I took were little Mia’s. They weren’t quite the same as what I could have captured in the studio, but it was what it was at that time.
It was so lovely to be contacted by Mia’s mummy to take her first birthday photographs in advance of her birthday party on the 8th May 2021. Alice, Mia’s mummy had warned me before the session that Mia might be a bit of a challenge as she never sits still and is constantly on the go. Challenge accepted! It ended up that I had over 60 photographs to share with Alice.
“Hi Jennifer thank you for today, I absolutely love them all”. Mia turned out to be a bit of a natural in front of the camera. I love the outfit that Alice chose for the session. It was a romper from JoJo Maman Bebe, the colour was just amazing. She had a friend who has an embroidery business (MillesEmbroidery Co) to add ‘Mia is 1’ to the romper.
When Alice shared Mia’s photographs on her social media she posted these words “I don’t know how this happened, but MIA IS ONE! Happy birthday to our beautiful, crazy haired, happy, loving, wild little lady. This year hasn’t been easy by any means… But WE MADE IT. We will make sure you have the best day darling girl, you have brought so much light and joy into our lives. We love you endlessly and are extremely proud to be your mummy and daddy, happy first birthday to our baby girl.“
I asked Alice why having a first birthday photo session was important to her: “With Mia being born in complete lockdown we haven’t be able to celebrate many of her firsts with family members and friends. We wanted something really special to mark her first birthday, something we could share with everyone, that’s why we came to Jennifer and had our gorgeous first photographs taken.
I asked what the photographs meant to them: “The photos mean everything to us, it’s truly a memory of a crazy year for us. To be able to gift our family near and far with such lovely photographs, it’s a wonderful feeling. We can’t wait to show Mia when she is older and tell her all about what a superstar she was in front of the camera.”
For me, my time spent with Alice, Ian and Mia has been amazing. I am so glad I was able to capture two special moments; their newborn photographs and Mia’s first birthday. Beautiful memories that Mia will treasure forever!
